Am I to assume that a lot of people are just making tracks based off stuff their friends mixed together or something, which allowed them easy permission to post it online?įor personal use, you are most definitely free to choreograph anything you like, and do anything local with it. All really obscure stuff that I've never heard of (and unfortunately not a ton of stuff I liked, but that's beside the point). I only recently have tried Stepmania and some of the playlists you can download, and from what I gathered, it seems like a whole lot of weird anime tracks or remixed videogame tracks, stuff like that. Or maybe a better question is: how does this work with games like Stepmania, which has surely set some sort of precedent on this. Is there a fair amount of dance tracks that exist in the public domain or something? Trying to get permission from the artist is just not going to be worth my time.īut my question is moreso: how can we legally and ethically share at least some of the things we create? I was thinking music in the public domain should be fair game, but to be frank, I don't think ragtime piano ditties from 1910 or Beethoven's classics necessarily fit with the theme of the game. Its from a popular artist and while I have a legal digital copy myself, I know most people probably don't and that's fine, I just really want to play the song myself. Now, I've kinda already decided that my first track is something I'm not gonna be able to share. I figure if some people are going to start creating their own custom tracks for songs, obviously what's going to follow from that is people wanting to share their masterful creations.
